Data Obfuscation

Definition:

The process of obscuring, redacting, or transforming certain elements in data in order to prevent the identification of parties or inappropriate disclosure of private information that may be contained in that data.

Commentary:

In the case of personally identifiable information this can be referred to as anonymization or pseudonymization.

Data encryption is also a technique that can be used to obfuscate identifying data.
